Sometimes when the piece is time/cost sensitive I may use handheld dremel tools to speed up the formation process, but they are always finished by hand to the point where there isn't a machine mark left anywhere. I specialize in high detail sculpting, and often when asked to carve an animal, I have to ask what specific species. I also have experience with repairs if that's what you're looking for. My Approach
From lovingly handmade sculptures exploring Form and Spirit, to ideas or 2D pictures turned into a 3D sculpture, I never make the exact same piece twice in my life.
I approach my commissions with a unique perspective that takes into account your needs and individual taste. I can do anything from a bare idea mixing my styles with your personality, to taking a picture and turning it into a three dimensional sculpture. My style and technique are broad and flexible, drawing from global traditions, developed over 14 years of self-training and experience. I usually charge $30-60 an hour depending on the size, difficulty, and complexity.
I approach my uncommissioned work from my heart. Ideas I find important, beautiful, or perplexing. Sometimes I approach the stone itself, ask it to communicate it's true form, and then just start carving until it feels finished. I'll usually only charge $30 an hour for these pieces since they're from the heart, thus less strain and effort to produce.
I also do repairs and restoration on stone or wood sculptures at a rate of $35 plus materials.
I do make exceptions to hourly rates, and have been known to give a quote and stick to it, even when the work has taken longer than quoted. I will only charge above a quoted price if asked to do more work than the original quote covered, or if told to do the best I can regardless of the quote.
